All workshops are one-day-workshops and will be held between September 28 (afternoon) and September 29, 2011.

Workshop 1: Semantic Digital Archives - sustainable long-term curation perspectives of Cultural Heritage

Since decades, the amount of content created digitally is growing and nowadays its complete life cycle tends to remain digital. Hence, we need sustainable long-term curation perspectives of our digital cultural heritage. However, digital content poses many challenges for long-term or indefinite preservation. Examples being changing technologies and changing user communities as well as the increasing complexity of digital content being enriched with software and multimedia attachments. Dealing with these challenges is the central theme of the workshop.

The workshop „Semantic Digital Archives" aims at promoting and discussing sophisticated knowledge representation and knowledge management solutions specifically designed for improving Archival Information Systems. For this purpose, it is intended to bring together the digital libraries community, the digital archiving community and the semantic technologies community.

Workshop 3: Fourth Workshop on Very Large Digital Libraries - VLDL 2011

Today's information society is confronted with the data deluge issue and is requesting for Digital Libraries that are capable to effectively serve broader and challenging scenarios. Information seekers are willing to have immediate and effective access to human knowledge that – differently from the past – very often is produced and disseminated through heterogeneous sources. Such scenarios call for the development of Very Large Digital Libraries (VLDLs), which are "very large" with respect to various aspects including the number and type of information objects and collections to be made available, the number of users to be served, the number of interoperability issues to be resolved, the number of "systems" to be federated, the number of heterogeneities to be reconciled. Although there is no consensus yet on what a VLDL is, there is a bunch of research issues that comes in tandem with VLDLs and that are worth to be discussed.

Scholarly communication itself has changed a lot during the last years and is today driven by "open access" and "enhanced publications" having datasets (e.g., images, videos, XML/RDF files, Linked Data, web sites, databases, queries, benchmark files) as first class citizens among the research outcomes, on par of papers. The fourth edition of the Workshop will focus on the problems emerging from the marriage of "very-large" Digital Libraries and "very-large" Data Archives, in an attempt to manage, combine and interlink datasets with publications. Such problems include metadata definition, annotations, search, preservation, provenance, metadata aggregation, etc.

Workshop 4: Linking Research and Education in Digital Libraries

This workshop aims at bringing forward a discussion on how better to exploit the results of research for education in Digital Libraries, or more generally, education for information workers. The main thread of discussion will be a critical review of the roles of the information workers, considering not only the impact brought by the advances in the technical dimension, but considering also other dimensions such as policy, quality, user profiles, legal aspects, etc. On the practical side, the workshop aims at stimulating collaboration in education and research for the Digital Libraries, demonstrating and explaining tools and methods for the sharing of knowledge. It also aims at starting an initial discussion on how results of research in Digital Libraries can be usefully transferred to education in Digital Libraries, quickly and easily, e.g. by implementing a European scale mechanism for disseminating and integrating research results into education.

Workshop 5: User-Oriented Evaluation of Digital Library Interfaces

User-oriented evaluation of methods and systems in the area of digital libraries is often restricted to small numbers of users, or uses only shallow observation data like system logs or questionnaires. This workshop aims at carrying out a large collaborative evaluation prior to the workshop, where the collected data will be shared among all participants. At the meeting itself, we will discuss more generally the challenges of evaluating interfaces through this kind of experiments, with the experimental data used to exemplify an evaluation method.

The format of the workshop will be as follows:

• Presentation and discussion of results of the joint evaluation
• Presentations of the workshop participants about their own work in this area, as well as position statements
• Discussion of plans for future activities of this kind

Workshop 6: Networked Knowledge Organisation Systems and Services:
The 10th European Networked Knowledge Organisation Systems (NKOS) Workshop

The 10th European NKOS workshop at TPDL explores the potential of Knowledge Organization Systems, such as classification systems, taxonomies, thesauri, ontologies, and lexical databases. These tools attempt to model the underlying semantic structure of a domain for purposes of information retrieval, knowledge discovery, language engineering, and the semantic web. The workshop provides an opportunity to report and discuss projects, research, demonstrators, and development related to Networked Knowledge Organization Systems/Services in next-generation digital libraries. A further objective is to systematically engage in discussions in common areas of interest with selected related communities and to investigate potential co-operation.
